LIVESTOCK RESEARCH STATION, KATTUPAKKAM
      The Livestock Research Station was originally started as "Sheep Farm" with an area of 246.69 ha. In the year 1957. It is situated 40 km south of Chennai city on Grand Southern Trunk Road. The farm had been brought under the control of the Director of Veterinary Education and Research on 01.12.1969 and was named as "Livestock Research Station" since research involves many species of livestock viz. cattle, sheep, goat, swine and poultry. Later this farm had become a constituent unit of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University from 01.12.1976 and continues to function under Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University from 20.09.1989.

      The Institute of Animal Nutrition, Krishi Vigyan Kendra and Agricultural Technology Information Centre are also stationed within the farm campus.

OBJECTIVES

  • To evolve superior strains of livestock suited to the local agro-climate and ecological conditions through programmed genetic research.
  • To form a nucleus centre for the dissemination of superior germplasm of various livestock to meet the growing demands in the state of Tamil Nadu.
  • To cater the needs of the undergraduate and postgraduate education and research.
  • To serve as an extension education centre for farmers to learn appropriate breeding and management practices of various species of livestock.

Sales Counter

  • Through the sales counter located at the main entrance of this station, the products available are sold regularly on all the days except on Gandhi Jayanthi, Mahaveer Jayanthi and Good Friday.
  • The timings of sales at this counter is from 7.00 a.m to 1.00 p.m.
  • Live animals are available for breeding purpose.

  • Evolving a breed of cattle suitable for the plains of Tamil Nadu.
  • Determination of genetic parameters of economic traits and establishment of an elite herd of Murrah buffaloes.
  • Studies on productive and reproductive performance of Surti and its graded buffaloes.
  • Genetic studies on sheep.
  • Determination of genetic parameters of economic traits in Large White Yorkshire pigs.
